The Markets, Patents & Alliances team, comprised of Mark Nowotarski and Tom Bakos, has over 50 years of combined experience in the technology, insurance, health care, electronics and manufacturing industries.

Real-world experience gives Mark and Tom the ability to accurately assess the patentability of an invention, and to develop patent strategies that are consistent with each client’s larger business objectives.

Mark Nowotarski is the President of Markets, Patents & Alliances L.L.C. and is a registered U.S. patent agent specializing in business method patents. He currently serves clients in the insurance, financial services, medical devices and manufacturing industries.

Mark is also co-editor of the Insurance IP Bulletin. The Insurance IP Bulletin is dedicated to providing useful information to innovators in the insurance industry regarding the protection of their inventions with patents and ways to effectively promote their innovation.

Mark is a former Associate Director of R&D for Praxair. There he was responsible for the development and successful worldwide introduction of new products into the health care, electronics, and manufacturing industries. His initiatives generated over $300 million in sales. He established successful licensing programs with a number of Universities and Health Care institutions including Stanford University, Carnegie Mellon University, and the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. He was a leader in the reengineering of Praxair's patent system, and was responsible for technology planning for their home health care division.

Mark is an inventor on 17 US patents. He was appointed Corporate Research Fellow for the commercial impact of his inventions.

Mark has a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford and a Bachelor's degree with honors in Aerospace, Mechanical Sciences and Engineering Physics from Princeton. His academic awards include the Sigma Xi award for most outstanding Mechanical Engineering research at Princeton and the Union Carbide Award for Academic Excellence and Leadership in Mechanical Engineering, also at Princeton.

Mark is a member of the Intellectual Property Owners Association. He is also a member of the Licensing Executive Society, and the Connecticut Intellectual Property Law Association. Mark has been a guest lecturer on patent prosecution strategies at New York Law School and new product development strategies at the UCONN School of Business. Mark has recently coauthored several articles on patents for insurance products for National Underwriter Magazine and On The Risk Journal. Tom Bakos

Tom has over 40 years of general management and technical actuarial experience. He was Chief Actuary for BISYS Insurance Services, VP and Life Actuary for Guardian Life Insurance Company of America and filled similar actuarial roles in both large and small, stock and mutual life insurance companies including: Integrated Resources Life Insurance Company; Security Mutual Life Insurance Company; Lincoln American Life Insurance Company; and CNA Life Insurance.

Tom is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). He served on the Board of Governors of the Society of Actuaries from 2002 to 2005. Tom also serves as Chairman of the American Academy of Actuaries (AAA) Committee on Professional Responsibility and is on the AAA Council on Professionalism.

Tom is a regular contributor to Contingencies Magazine, The National Underwriter, and other industry publications writing on insurance related topics.
